MEMBERSHIP OF THE INSTITUTE
Membership is by application. Acceptable members would normally possess a University Degree, HND/ND, and Diploma/Certificate in Secretarial Administration from the Universities, Polytechnics and other professional Institutions and will be required to take part in the pre-admission screening.
THE GRADE FOR MEMBERS
FELLOWS (FIPS): This grade is for highly experienced and holders of B.Sc./HND or its equivalent in Secretarial Administration who have worked for a period of not less than fifteen (15) years and have been an active member on "MEMBERSHIP GRADE" of the Institute for a period not less than five (5) active years to qualify for consideration. Senior Secretarial Lecturers in the Universities, Polytechnics, Colleges of Education or Vocational/Technical Colleges, etc, may also be considered for this grade after two (2) active years on "Membership Grade" of the Institute to qualify for consideration.
MEMBER (MIPS): A seasoned Secretarial Professional with a recognized reputation who can demonstrate that he/she has served employers satisfactorily as a Full time or part time ethical practitioner for uninterrupted period of three (3) years. He/She would normally have a University Degree, HND or any other equivalent processional qualification in Secretarial Administration, acceptable to the Council of the Institute.
GRADUATE MEMBER (GMIPS) This grade is for graduates with B.Sc./HND or its equivalents in Secretarial Administration, Employed or unemployed at the time of membership application.
ASSOCIATES (AIPS): The Associate Membership grade of the Institute is granted to any person who qualified as a Secretary.He/She would normally have ND/Diploma/ Certificate in Secretarial Administration or its equivalent qualifications. Graduates in other disciplines but with Secretarial background may also be considered for admission.
HONORARY FELLOWS (CIPS): Honorary Fellowship is conferred exceptionally by the Institute on individuals in recognition of their achievements in their fields of specialization. The award is open to Heads of State, Governors, Ministers, Commissioners, Members of the National Assembly, Permanent Secretaries Directors, Professors, Head of Departments, Chairmen/Chief Executives of Companies , Senior Managers in private and public Organizations, Members of the Armed Forces and the Police, etc.

CODE OF ETHICS
Although the primary objective of any Professional Organization is to further the economic interest of their members, they are basically an integral part of the Society and cannot realistically be considered outside it. They have become an important part of the economic fabric of Nigeria - recognized, respected, and consulted by the Government and Employers.
WHEREAS managements rely on the profession of NIPS to assist in the fulfillment of their management stewardship; and Recognizing that ethics are an important consideration in the practice of Education and that the moral principles followed by members. The Society should be formalized, the following resolution shall and hereby adopted:-
WHEREAS the members of the Nigerian Institute of Professional Secretaries represent the profession of Secretarial Practitioners WHEREAS said members must maintain high standards of conduct, honour, and character in order to carry on proper and meaningful educational training, etc;
